The Denver City Council on Monday passed two measures that provide different ways for the city to bring to fruition a proposed 10-year, $150 million affordable housing plan, setting up for a boisterous meeting next week to come to a resolution on the nettlesome issue.

A main bill designed to raise funds for cheaper housing via a property tax hike on homeowners and impact fees on developers passed unanimously while an alternate measure delaying the fees and tax increase by a year squeaked by on a 7-5 vote. Both measures will be discussed Sept. 19.

One common theme echoed throughout Monday’s meeting was the idea that something has to be done about the city’s rising home prices to make sure low- and moderate-income people can find a place to live.
